The Severn Valley Railway is a unique steam train experience which runs from the leafy town of Kidderminster in Worcestershire, to the picturesque Bridgnorth in Shropshire.
It is the most popular heritage railway line in the country, and it is one of few railways left of its kind.
To begin your journey, you can hop on a traditional, steam-powered locomotive at any one of the railway line’s six stations, which include Kidderminster, Bewdley, Arley, Highley, Hampton Loade and Bridgnorth, and get ready to be transported back in time for an unforgettable adventure!
The railway line follows the course of the River Severn for most of its route, taking you through idyllic countryside, fairytale forests, tranquil lakes and peaceful scenery.
Each station town has its own unmissable attractions to offer; Bridgnorth is home to the remains of the 12th Century Bridgnorth Castle, and the town hosts a bustling Saturday street market, as well as having plenty of shops and cafes to explore, whilst Hampton Loade accommodates the National Trust 17th Century mansion, Dusmaston Hall. At Highley, you can explore the Severn Valley Country Park, ideal for ramblers and cyclists, and it is also home to the Severn Valley Railway’s main visitor centre, The Engine House. At Arley, you can sit down for nice quite picnic in the countryside, wander along the riverbank, and even get lost in a maze at the Arley Arboretum! The stunning Georgian town of Bedlwey is set right on the waterfront, where you can visit the museum and art galleries, go shopping, and get a bite to eat, and then your journey finishes off in Kidderminster, where you can marvel at the model railway and buy a souvenir at the gift-shop. Kidderminster also has rail connections to Worcester and Birmingham in order to help you get back home.
If that isn’t enough, the Railway holds seasonal events and fairs throughout the year, the most popular being the Special Christmas Events, where the children can meet Santa Claus himself on board, and where adults can dine on Christmas fayre and join in Christmas carol-singing, which is all finished off with a mince pie!
