Asteroid
And the good news is.....2011 MD will miss us
About this favourite
Earth is about to have a near miss encounter with an asteroid the size of a house today! The asteroid, named 2011 MD was only discovered last week, and will miss Earth by a relatively close 12000 -17,700 km (7500-11,000 miles) which is about 23 times closer than the Moon. It’s closest approach will be at 13:26 UTC/GMT today, June 27. The only place where it may be possible to track the asteroid is from South Africa.
Scientists are confident that there is no danger to Earth but if it did enter Earth's atmosphere it would burn up in a brilliant fireball and possibly scatter a few meteorites.
Phew that's a relief then!
