Largest turtle fossil discovered
Carbonemys - Puentemys mushaisaensis
About this favourite
Scientists have discovered an amazingly large turtle fossil, probably the largest turtle ever to have lived named Carbonemys. Its round shell measures 5 ft (1.52m) across and it lived 60 million years ago in what is now the north west of South America around what is now Colombia. The turtle was the size of a small car and was unlikely to have had many enemies because of its size and enormous protective shell.
Its discovery has given strong support to the theory that tropical reptiles were much bigger millions of years ago than they are now following the disappearance of the dinosaurs.
