Croquet
About this favourite
Introduced to England from France in the mid 19th century, Croquet, a gae played with a long handled mallet, wooden balls and metal hoops, swept the country with playing areas being set up everywhere. It's thought that both Pall Mall and The Mall (important roads in London) were originally used for the game which had been called paille maille in French. The headquarters of Croquet were established at Wimbledon, now better known as the home of tennis.
