Commissioned by the Arts Council, Anthony McCall's 'Column' has at last received approval from Wirral Council. The £500,000 Cultural Olympiad installation will be sited over the Wirral Estuary directly opposite Liverpool's Pier Head and will be visible for up to 100km. The installation is a huge spinning tower of steam and objections had been raised because of safety concerns for aircraft at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport and the worry of the possibility of Legionnaires disease. The fears have been allayed and the Column will form one of the 12 artworks on display across the UK in conjunction with London 2012.
