Hailed as the national sport in Fiji, they have won the Rugby World Cup Sevens twice and the IRB Sevens World Series Once. Rugby is the leading sport here and is a highly played sport – an estimated 60,000 seniors and 20,000 school children play the sport.
Rugby football was introduced to Fiji by British, New Zealanders and Fijian soldiers of the Native Constabulary. By the 1890s the sport began to draw attention from the media and started to become established as a sport in Fiji.
By 2001 the Fiji Rugby Union embraced professional rugby, and made huge changes to the constitution, administration and management of Fiji rugby.
