About this favourite

This old Rover SD1 may not look like much. But under the bonnet lies an altogether different way of powering its four wheels. Believe it or not it runs on ground up coffee beans. Its creator Jem Stansfield got the idea from a tv programme that showed how a gasifier could heat the beans so that they gave off combustible gases that could be used to drive the engine.

It has just earned itself the Guinness world record for fastest speed for a car run on organic waste and achieved a more than respectable 66.5 mph.
