Hardworking Swiss spurn extra holidays
About this favourite
The Swiss have been to the polls to vote on lengthening their annual holidays and opted, by a large majority, to stick with 4 weeks per year. They had been offered the chance to increase their holiday allowance to 6 weeks but caution got the better of them in view of the extra burden this would create for industry, and decided not to change .
Four weeks paid leave is the norm across the EU countries although France and Austria enjoy 5 weeks. Switzerland is not an EU member but tends to keep in step with most of its neighbours.
