Pumice
Huge floating island of pumice in the South Pacific
About this favourite
Shipping traffic has reported an enormous floating island of pumic, thought to have come from underwater volacnic eruptions. The Havre volcano, midway between Tonga and New Zealand, is thought to have erupted more than 150 times over 48 hours between 17 and 18 July, spewing vast amounts of lightweight pumice which is now floating on the sea and which has formed an 'island' measuring 7500 square kilometres.
