One of the world's strongest and most successful ice hockey nations, Slovakia is currently ranked 7th and was placed 4th in the 2010 Winter Olympics having beaten favourites Russia and Sweden.  The sport has always enjoyed strong support but the formation of the newly independent Slovakia in January 1993 prompted the development of the national team.  For a small nation the country's influence is quite extensive with Slovak players involved in many American and Canadian NHL teams.
