About this favourite

Researchers have discovered that the plight of the lemur is actually worse than had been thought with 90% of species threatened, many endangered and 23 species critically endangered. The critically endangered classification indicates that there are fewer than 50 mature adults or that their numbers have dropped by 80% over the past decade.

Although protected, illegal logging is destroying their habitat and the animals are being hunted. Political instability means that there is little in the way of law enforcement to prevent the damage to their environment. The hardwood trees like ebony are highly prized and in great demand for high quality furniture and with most workers surviving on less that $2 per day, the temptation is hard to resist.
