This hidden gem is an example of what some well allocated funding can do. A £4.8 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £1.8 million from Somerset County Council went into producing this wonderfully modern museum. It is located in the grade 1 listed Taunton Castle which itself dates back to the 12th century. The museum offers to tell you a story using a combination of film, sound and images alongside real objects. The projected image of roman characters above the Low Ham mosaic (circa 350AD) is exceptionally engaging. It is evident how much work and care has gone into presenting Somerset's history in such an accessible and impressive way. It is a must visit for anyone wanting to learn about the areas heritage. Look out for the Frome Hoard, the largest collection of Roman coins ever discovered in Britain in a single container.
