The longstanding friendship between the Maronites and Cyprus will continue and grow, Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi has said.
In statements to the press upon his arrival to Cyprus for a visit, the Patriarch noted, “I believe that the oldest Embassy of Lebanon is the Embassy in Cyprus.”
Addressing Under Secretary to the President Titos Christophides, who welcomed him on behalf of the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, the Patriarch said “we would like you to pass on to the President that this friendship between the Maronites and Cyprus will continue and grow and that our relation as Lebanese with the state of Cyprus will also grow and develop in time.”
He also said that, despite the fact that his visit is a pastoral one, it also has other dimensions.
“We are looking forward to meeting in particularly his grace the Archbishop of Cyprus,” the Patriarch said, adding that “we are very keen on developing the already good, ecumenical relationship that we have with the Orthodox Church.”
According to the Patriarch, his visit also has a cultural and a social dimension.cna
