Immortalised in song and poem and stirring the soul in many a sentimental Brit, the white cliffs of Dover hold a unique part in the hearts of our island race. They are the first and last things seen of England on arrival or departure by boat from the Kent coast, the symbol of fortitude in times of war and the much prized trophy for actual and potential invaders.
In order to safeguard the natural environment, prevent development and ensure a public right of way, the Natural Trust is seeking to raise £1.2 million to purchase a one mile stretch of the cliffs to join together areas either side that the Trust already controls. A public appeal will be launched to raise the money so keep a look out for those 'blue birds' or at the very least the kittiwakes, fulmars and peregrine falcons that can be seen above and on the cliffs.
