Niku Sushi, literally raw meat sushi, is proving to be a huge success in trendy Tokyo restaurant Niku and more than half the customers are women who describe themselves as Carnivore Girls who regularly enjoy raw beef, pork, chicken and horse meat. Their opposite numbers have come to be known as Herbivore Boys, a name synonymous with those men who are less macho and ambitious and more cautious about money and their future.
Japan's conservative society has been caught by surprise at the change in the status of traditionally more subservient girls to ambitious, independent business women in control of their money, their homes and their lives. The static state of the Japanese economy over the past 20 years or so is thought to have been a contributor to this changing status. Meanwhile savvy restauranteurs are capitalising on the trend and clients are flocking to get their regular fix of raw protein.
