PHOTOMARATHON 2012
About this favourite

PHOTOMARATHON 2012
05 MAY
10:30PM TO 4:30PM

What is it?

Organised as part of the 2012 Guernsey Photography Festival, the Photomarathon is a one?day photography competition with a twist; in 6 hours you have to take 12 pictures on 12 given topics.

The rules of the competition state that you may only take one photograph per topic so no digital cameras are allowed?–?disposable film cameras will be provided which have only 12 shots. Alternatively if you have your own 35mm film camera you would prefer to use we can provide you with a special roll of film with only 12 exposures.

The Photomarathon competition is a great way for friends, families and individuals to join together and get creative. You are welcome to enter as an individual or as a team of up to 4 [the entry fee is per camera, not per person]. Of course the more competitive of you may wish to strike out alone and push your individual creativity to the max. Don’t worry?–?there’s no running involved (unless you want to!); competitors will be judged not on their fitness but on their creativity and interpretation of the topics. Last year 100 people took up the Photomarathon challenge and we’re looking forward to another fun and exciting day.

Who can enter?

The Photomarathon is open to anyone. Young people under the age of 18 must provide written consent from their parent or guardian to take part. The Guernsey Photography Festival cannot take responsibility for the supervision of children during this event and would therefore recommend that children under the age of 14 are accompanied by an adult.

The Day Itself

The headquarters for this year’s Guernsey Photomarathon will be The Gallery, 9?11 Mansell Street.

Registration begins at 10.00am and competition packs will be handed out, then at 10.30am each entrant receives the first set of 4 topics. Competitors will then have the next two hours to shoot one image per topic, in the same order as the topics are listed. At 12.30pm the next set of 4 topics are released. Each entrant must personally collect the set of topics from the HQ, and have their entry card stamped to prove attendance. This process is repeated again at 2.30pm. Completed entries will be accepted at the HQ until 5.00pm.

The topics are kept secret until revealed every two hours and will offer plenty of room for creativity. The imagination and creativity in interpreting the topics is more important than the technical perfection of the photographs and you are free to use flash guns, tripods, filters or any other related equipment. The only limits are the single 12 exposure film, the 6 hours and your own creativity.

After the day of the Photomarathon, all of the films will be processed and the pictures printed. Our panel of judges will then meet to decide the winners.

Prizes

Among the judges this year will be Jean?Christophe Godet, photographer and director of The Guernsey Photography Festival, and John O’Neill, owner of O’Neill’s Photo Agency.

Prizes will be awarded as follows: 1st Prize, 2nd Prize, 3rd Prize, Junior Prize and Topic Winners. The results will remain confidential until the prizes are given at the awards ceremony (details will be announced shortly).

The Guernsey Photomarathon Exhibition

All the photos taken during the day (yes all of them) will be going on show in a free public exhibition as part of the 2012 Guernsey Photography Festival, from Friday 25 May until Friday 22 June. You will receive your exhibition photos free of charge after the festival.

Entry costs

Entry to the Guernsey Photomarathon costs £12.00; this will cover the costs of the camera or film and its processing, as well as the printing and mounting of the photographs for the public exhibition.

How to enter

Download the registration form. Your place and entry number will be confirmed by email. 100 places are available, and will be given on a first?come first?served basis.
