Rachel Coad New paintings and drawings
ROA Gallery, 5b Pall Mall, Royal Opera Arcade, London, SW1Y 4UY
June 9-18 2011
Rachel Coad's second exhibition in London. Coads last ‘Clusters’ exhibition (2009) featured seven young Australians living and working in London.
Continuing her 'Clusters' theme, Coad works this time with anonymous subjects and also includes work from her 'Moments In Between' series.
- an excerpt from a review on Coad's 'Clusters' and 'Moments in Between' work:
"There is an increasing sophistication to these works which tighten Coad's approach. The flowing drawing style when needed, along with the paint wash and the historic figures, combine to evoke a sense of narrative which helps lure the viewer into the mystery. Who are these figures, what lives did they lead and what does their reappearance now mean to me?
As such Coad taps into the contemporary epidemic of nostalgia but does so in a way that benefits her work's sensibilities. Legacy does not see Coad leave her methodology but rather extend her Clusters series into an historical framework. This then moves her work into mythology and mystery and changes the way we read these works.
Legacy becomes as much about the way we read history through images, indeed about the way we view art history through paintings, as it does about chance encounters and telling new stories.
….I felt a definitive engagement with the subject's lives and the mystery of their reappearance. Coad has mixed these "found images" with several "moments
in-between" which highlights the show's propensity as a whole to take us on a narrated journey."
