Swiss Re Building
Swiss Re Building
About this favourite
The Swiss Re building at 30 St Mary Axe is known to Londoners as the Gherkin. Designed by Norman Foster, the unconventional building replaced the old Baltic Exchange which had been badly damaged by an IRA bomb in the early nineties. Special conditions were attached to the planning permission to ensure that sight lines to Christopher Wrenn's masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral would not be compromised. The Gherkin is 180m tall with 40 floors and a glass structure at the very top known as the Lens which echos a similar feature of the Baltic Exchange
