Tourist camp set up by Mt Nyamuragira in Congo
About this favourite

Rangers in Virunga National Park in the Republic of Congo have set up a camp close to the erupting Mount Nyamuragira, Africa's most active volcano with more than 40 eruptions over the past century.  Visitors are able to have a unique close up view of the eruption as lava is being thrown out of the crater in fountains more than 200m (620ft) high.  Although rivers of lava are flowing north, the area is uninhabited and neither the resident communities of chimpanzees nor the mountain gorillas are thought to be at risk.
Mount Nyamuragira is only a short distance from Mt Nyiragongo which erupted in2002 destroying Goma City and causing 350000 to escape to safety.
