EADS has released plans for a hypersonic jet capable of flying at 5000 km per hour ( 3125mph) which would mean that a flight from London toTokyo would only take 2 hours, New York 1.5 hours and Sydney 3.5 hours. The aircraft would be one of the world’s cleanest, powered by biofuels, hydrogen and oxygen as it carries up to 100 passengers 32km (20 miles) above the Earth. The plane is scheduled to make its first commercial flight in 2050.
The Zehra – Zero Emission Hypersonic Transportation – is being developed by European aeronautics and defence giant EADS. The company, which owns plane manufacturer Airbus, has been working on the project since the supersonic jet Concorde was scrapped eight years ago following a fatal crash near Paris in July 2000.
EADS innovation and technology director Jean Botti said as he unveiled designs for the plane at Le Bourget airshow in Paris on Saturday: ‘The plane would fly just above the atmosphere, meaning it could fly at more than 4,800kph (3,000mph).
‘We have been working on this project for long enough now to know that it is viable.’
Hypersonic speeds would enable the jet to fly from London to Malaga in Spain in 20 minutes, to the east coast of the US in about an hour and to Sydney in about three and a half hours.
