Kyoto, Japan
Formerly the capital of Imperial Japan, Kyoto escaped the ravages of the Second World War, and so is home to the largest collection of pre-war buildings in the country. With an estimated 2000 shrines in the city, Kyoto is home to approximately 20% of Japan's national treasures. Kyoto is the city to visit to experience the traditional side of Japanese life.
Kyoto is only a few hours from Tokyo on the bullet train. Travelling like that, your holiday really does begin with the journey.
