Tikal, Guatemala
The very first mixed Unesco World Heritage site, Tikal was appointed in 1979. The city dates back to 4BC and forms one of the largest archaeology sites of the Mayan civilization. At it's zenith it was home to as many as 90,000 people living and working in thousands of stone structures, the most important of these are 6 large temples all built facing each other.
It is thought that the city fell into decline after 4AD and was eventually abandoned in 10AD.
