For almost 300 years Bratislava was the Coronation City for the Kings of Hungary. In more recent years the first weekend of September has been designated for the Coronation Ceremony with parades, music and folk craftsmen at work. On the Sunday, the re-enactment of the coronation takes place with actors taking the parts and doing their best to ensure that the costumes, the oaths and speeches are as accurate as they can be. In the period between 1563 and 1830 there were 10 Kings of Hungary crowned and each year a different ceremony is chosen for the re-enactment.
An excellent opportunity to see the pomp and ceremony of Hungary's royal house parading through the Old Town from Bratislava Castle, join the royal procession, enjoy the jousting and witness the wine pouring from a fountain for one day only. All this is followed later by an impressive fireworks display.
