Basic commodity supplies shut off

Essential supplies of sugar, soy bean oil and palm oil suddenly stopped in response to the new government set prices, creating chaos and panic buying. Traders were accused of creating an artificial shortage to allow them to charge higher prices to maximise profits.  The government commerce ministry had only set new tariffs on Wednesday and traders had complained that they stood to lose money as they had bought supplies at higher wholesale levels.
