A Russian nuclear submarine, the Yekaterinburg, has been badly damaged as fire engulfed the vessel that was being repaired and refitted in drydock. Several sailors have been taken to hospital suffering the effects of inhaling toxic fumes and it is known that a number of the crew are still trapped on board. The blaze spread from the wooden scaffolding to the submarine's rubberised hull as firefighters fought for hours to get it under control.
Fumes from the fire have spread to the nearby town of Roslyakovo and although these are feared to be toxic there are currently no evacuation plans for the area. The authorities are confident that there has been no radiation leak from the Delta IV submarine that carries 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles.
