French spiderman climbs world's tallest building

Frenchman Alain Robert, dubbed Spiderman, has climbed to the top of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, Dubai.  He took six hours to reach the top of the spire which stands at 828m (2717ft) and his progress was picked out by searchlights after darkness fell.  Crowds gathered to watch him make his way up the glass and steel structure.

Usually he climbs without safety  equipment but on this occasion permission was only granted on condition that he used ropes and a harness.  He did not appear to make much use of them though as he climbed hand over hand and from ledge to ledge.

Robert's total of the tallest skyscrapers has now reached 70 with the Empire State in New York, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and Tower 101 in Taiwan all under his belt.
