Kofi Annan to try to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis
UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon and Arab League leader Nabil ElAraby have jointly announced the appointment of Kofi Annan to try to negotiate a peaceful solution to Syria's humanitarian crisis. As the death toll continues to mount in the violent fighting across the country, it has been estimated that at least 500 children have died since the uprising began in March 2011.
The announcement comes shortly before the start of a conference in Tunisia to determine the way forward in light of the continuing relentless bombardment of Homs. Representatives from 60 countries will seek a road map to peace in President Bashar al-Assad's embittered and embattled country.
