Mayan sculptures provenance dispute
French auction house Drouot is embroiled in a dispute about the authenticity of almost 70 pieces of Mayan sculpture sold at auction in Paris on Monday. Mexico's National Institute of Anthropolgy and History is not convinced of their provenance and has said they are fakes. Features, size, height all differ from the characteristics of the artefacts typical of the Pre Columbian period. As just a single lot, featuring a masked figure, achieved $4.2m alone, investigations and wrangling are likely to continue at the highest level until the provenance is incontrovertibly established.
