Thousands of cheering Egyptians have crowded into Cairo's Tahrir Square to welcome the announcement of Mohamed Morsi as their new President - the first ever freely elected Egyptian leader. The new premier has vowed to represent all Egyptians regardless of their political affiliations. The leadership campaign has been seen as divisive, pitting, as it did, a representative of the Muslim Brotherhood, Morsi, against the previous Prime Minister, Ahmed Shafiq, a staunch supporter of the previous Mubarak regime.
Mr Morsi has started establishing his new administration immediately but observers are speculating exactly how much control he will actually be permitted to wield as the interim military government strive to shore up their power base.
