Russian warships en route to Syrian port to restock after Mediterranean exercises
Significant or just coincidence, three Russian ships are on their way to the port of Tartus in Syria following manoeuvres in the Mediterranean. They are going to refuel and restock supplies of food and water before continuing the planned exercises and returning to Russian waters. Suggestions have been made that they may be carrying weapons bound for President Assad's forces but these have been denied. The fighting in what is now acknowledged to be a civil war between army forces and rebels has escalated in recent days with high casualties in the city of Aleppo.
