A mission to rescue a squirrel trapped in a manhole cover ended in tragedy as the terrified rodent died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The creature was found with its head stuck in a manhole cover in Hamburg, Germany. It soon became the centre of attention as passers-by called the fire service to help. The red squirrel, thought to have got stuck while searching for food, was taken, still lodged inside the manhole cover, to a local animal shelter where it was anaesthetised and freed using cutting equipment. Although not injured, the animal was kept in overnight to be monitored before it tragically died. It is thought its death was caused by stress.
