Train crash in Buenos Aires claims the lives of 49

A commuter train accident at Once station in Buenos Aires has killed 49 and injured almost 700.  Rescue workers fought for hours to free trapped passengers in the front three cars which were crushed in the impact with the buffers at the end of the line.  According to witnesses more than 1000 people were on board the train.

The locomotive was travelling too fast to stop and hit the end of the track at 26kmph (16mph) causing the carriages immediately behind the engine to overrun each other, one apparently embedded itself 6m (20ft) into the one in front.

Fleets of ambulances ferried the wounded to local hospitals and medical services believe that the death toll will rise because of the severity of the injuries some have sustained. The condition of the driver is thought to be serious.
