Established in 1533 in the name of the King of Spain, Cartagena became a centre of political and economic activity in the region after the development of the colony.  It had been a centre of civilisation for thousands of years before this with pottery dated to around 4000BC.  It is thought though that local tribes were present in the area for as long as 3000 years before this.

The Spanish walled city and fortress have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
