Chengdu Panda Centre
About this inspiration
Since 1987 the Chengdu Panda Centre in Sichuan has run a breeding programme to protect the increasingly rare pandas from extinction. The work that the centre carries out is proving to be successful and the captive population has grown to 62 with 110 panda births. The centre works with a number of partner organisations around the world to conserve the breed and co-operates in the loaning of pandas to zoos. Edinburgh Zoo is due to receive a pair, Yangguang and Tian-Tian later in 2011 and hopes to see the birth of a cub sometime in the 10 years of the loan arrangement.
