Recent research by Steven L Chown of Stellenbosch University has revealed the extent of the previously unknown creatures living in the deep Antarctic waters. Contrary to popular belief that the hostile environment would be unable to support many life forms, his work has demonstrated the significant diversity of previously unknown and unique species. The hydrothermal vents in the Southern Ocean provide a fascinating ecosystem in which myriad species thrive albeit with their own adaptations.
Further research is underway but the conservation protection afforded by the Antarctic Treaty and the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources means that the unique habitat can be explored without risk of damage from commercial interests.
