Literary lights including Faramerz Dabhoiwala and Lemn Sissay headline event from 3rd to 7th October
From 3rd to 7th of October, Bali will play host to some of the literary world’s most exciting authors as they gather on the island to take part in the 2012 Ubud Readers and Writers Festival. Highlights include Faramerz Dabhoiwala, acclaimed author of ‘The Origins of Sex’ and a Senior Fellow at Oxford University, Lemn Sissay, official poet at the London Olympics and Jose Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. For the fourth year running, Alila Ubud is a Gold Sponsor of this important cultural event, hosting guest authors and an exciting literary line-up.
The 2012 Ubud Readers and Writers Festival’s theme is ‘The Earth of Mankind’, taken from the title of one of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s epic novels. During the event the brightest global writers will come together in a celebration of stories and voices with a series of lunches, workshops and events open to the public.
The festival will welcome more than 120 scribes including writers, novelists, historians, screenwriters, poets and playwrights from all over the world, with participants from the UK, Ireland, Europe, Asia, North America, Australia and Africa,
The full programme for 2012 is yet to be announced but previous headliners have included Alexander MCall Smith, most famous for ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Series’ and Alice Seobold, author of the acclaimed bestseller ‘The Lovely Bones’.
Alila Ubud will be announcing a series of events at the hotel to include the largest literary lunch of the festival, which will take on a culinary theme in line with the resort’s gourmet credentials.
The enchanting and secluded hillside retreat is just minutes from the island’s artistic centre, Ubud and the perfect base from which to enjoy the festival and explore the surrounding area.

The five-night package includes 20% off lead in rates for both Deluxe and Villa room categories, complimentary participation in the Alila Ubud Literary Luncheon, daily a la Carte breakfast and Alila Hospitalities (complimentary Yoga, Tai Chi, shuttle to Ubud, daily afternoon tea based on hotel schedule). Extension rates are available from October 8th – 14th for those who wish to continue to soak up the atmosphere, at a reduced rate of USD $176++ per night for this period only staying in a Deluxe room.
