The poet Nicanor Parra is a member of the Parra family, the tribe that looms so large over Chile's cultural heritage.  His Modernist poetry has been hugely influencial in both the Spanish speaking and the wider world. 

His work moves away from the traditional language of poetry to adopt a more colloquial tone, and so became an important reference point for the English speaking Beat poets of the 1950s.
