Nigerian women empowered by award winning designer
About this inspiration
Award winning international designer Nike Davies Okundaye is keen to ensure the age old Yoruba tradition of Batik cloth dyeing, called Adire, continues. In doing so she is bringing hope and help to disadvantaged Nigerian women. Mama Nike, as they call her, runs workshops in southwest Nigeria to pass on the traditional skills to her pupils who in turn can earn a livelihood from their work. She arranges exhibitions of their fabrics and teaches them some of the business skills she has acquired. This together with a passion for their art should ensure a brighter future for themselves and their families.
