Salaam Baalak Trust
About this inspiration
The Salaam Baalak Trust has established five 24 hour shelters for street children of New Delhi and Mumbai who have run away or been abandoned. Situated close to main railway stations, the centres provide a refuge from street crime and abuse and the opportunity to go to school. Up to 5000 children are helped each year and encouraged to go on to higher education. Uniquely the older children act as guides to tourists on the Salaam Baalak City Walk and as well as showing them the slum areas close to the stations, they also tell their personal stories.
The Trust is self financing and ploughs all donations and money back into the projects giving the children in its care a bright and positive future
