Scientists mix spider DNA with silkworms to create ultra strong fibre
About this inspiration
It may be the stuff of Marvel comics but scientists at the University of Wyoming have genetically modified silkworms with spider genetic material to create fibres stronger than steel. They believe that the ultra strong material will be of huge use in the medical development of wound dressings, replacement tendons and ligaments and of commercial importance in bullet resistant garments due to the astonishing tensile strength of the product.
