The Arena of Nimes
About this inspiration
The Arena of Nimes is a first-century amphitheatre located in the French city of Nimes, in southern France. The arena was built principally for entertainment purposes for the people of Nimes, and served as fortification during the Barbarian Invasions and was the principal site of refuge for the citizens of the city when under attack. In 1863, the amphitheatre was converted into a bullring.
The structure is without doubt the best preserved example of its kind, but has not yet been awarded the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO, despite a less-well preserved example in nearby Arles being given the title in 1981.
