As 1 World Trade Center nears completion, the changing New York skyline evolves again.  Formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the 104 storey 1 World Trade Center (1WTC) stands at the north western corner of the original World Trade Center site in Lower Manhatten. Completely destroyed in the 9/11 attacks in 2001 on the twin towers, the new 1WTC will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the third-tallest building in the world by pinnacle height, with its spire reaching a symbolic 1,776 feet (541.3 m) in reference to the year of American independence.
