The death of Ralph McQuarrie over the weekend brings to a close a long life of  conceptual design and illustration.  The name may not be familiar but there can't be many people who have not seen the fantastic images from the original Star Wars trilogy, the original Battlestar Galactica TV series, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Cocoon, for which he won an Academy Award. In fact our whole perception of fantasy space travel, aliens and futuristic life forms has probably come straight from Ralph McQuarrie's head.  He fleshed out George Lucas' ideas and vision giving the world the space heroes, villains and space craft that we have come to know and love.
