The picturesque city and lake resort of Trakai is a historic gem in Western Lithuanian. Because of its proximity to Vilnius, Trakai is a popular tourist destination with its romantic castle being a main attraction. Trakai Historical National Park is the only historical national park in Europe and as the town is entirely built on water there are a number of natural, architectural, cultural and historical monuments scattered across its landscape.
The famous medieval Castle is thought of as being the most remarkable of all Lithuanian landmarks. The 15th Century castle sits on a small island surrounded by the Galve Lake and can only be reached by footbridge. It is possible to take a cruise around the castle on a hired boat or go on a steam boat tour that offers excellent scenery of the lake and surrounded islands.
Trakai is easily reachable by bus from Vilnius. It takes 45 minutes and the drive is as remarkable as you would expect from a Lithuanian trip to a medieval lake town.
