About this inspiration

Christchurch's ruined cathedral will be replaced with a transitional cathedral built from cardboard to withstand the effects of earthquakes in the volatile zone. Architect Shigeru Ban has submitted plans for the new place of worship at Latimer Square which will have a lifespan of between 20 and 30 years. The new structure will be based on a metal A frame design standing 25m high with timber and cardboard construction.

The new cathedral is hoped to be completed by December at a cost of £2.7m and will symbolise Hope for the reconstruction of the city so badly devastated by the 2011 earthquake.
