Algeria is the largest country on the coast of the Mediterranean. Between the sea and the Atlas Mountains is a hilly region where there is plenty of rain, however in the southern part of the country lie steppes and the arid dunes of the Sahara desert. The capital, Algiers, shows signs of the former colonial link with France with some elegant boulevards and the Cathedral of Notre Dame d’Afrique poised on a cliff overlooking the sea. The Ketchoua Mosque is in the historic Casbah area of the city with its picturesque winding lanes, and dates from the days of Ottoman rule. Once a base for the notorious Barbary pirates, Algiers suffered during the independence struggles and in the civil war of the last decade of the twentieth century, however planned developments include the redevelopment of the sea front and the new Metro system. Much of the country’s wealth is based on its oil, however figs, dates and citrus fruits grow well in the fertile soils of the coastal regions. Albert Camus the philosopher and novelist was a French Algerian.
