After independence from Portugal in 1975, Angola suffered a devastating quarter of a century of civil war, however the country’s natural resources like oil and diamonds are assisting with reconstruction. The Portuguese connection, which lasted four hundred years, has left a cultural heritage that includes Christianity, the cuisine and the Portuguese language. The landscape is diverse, ranging from the arid coastal region to low hills and mountains inland, as well as the high plains of the savanna, and the rain forest in the north. The fauna is typical of southern Africa: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino and hippo are all present, however poaching in the designated national parks is a problem, and may threaten the development of wildlife tourism. The capital, Luanda, is situated on the coast, and much of the infrastructure is being reconstructed, including the road and railway systems. One day spectacular sights like the Kalandula waterfalls, among the largest in Africa, may be firmly back on the tourist itinerary.
