Cote d'Ivoire
Cote d’Ivoire’s economic growth, based on coffee and cocoa exports, was ended by the outbreak of civil war. Though fighting has ended, there are still major tensions in this divided country, as elections do not seem to have produced a conclusive result. The countryside has rain forest as well as savannah, though there are no major mountain ranges. Unfortunately the Comoe National Park, one of the largest in West Africa, has suffered from poaching, lack of careful management and wildfires, causing it to be placed on the list of World Heritage Sites in danger. Not surprisingly tourism has declined significantly. The de facto capital, Abidjan, is the third largest francophone city in the world. The business district, Le Plateau has several skyscrapers. Ivorian folk music is based on vocal polyphony and the frequent used of talking drums. Cocoa farmers have been accused of using forced child labour to harvest the beans. Cote d’Ivoire has a successful football team. Didier Drogba is their most famous player. Rugby is growing in popularity.
