Egypt
Egypt is the birthplace of one of the Ancient World’s greatest civilizations. Today modern Egyptians depend on the Nile as much as their ancestors. The river, the greatest in the world, has for millennia provided a transport link and also irrigation and drinking water. Most Egyptians live in the narrow strip close to the Nile, and the desert on either hand remains empty as it always has been. Visitors to Egypt have a wealth of experiences to enjoy. Along the Red Sea coast are modern resorts catering to sun seekers and divers. Along the Nile are the iconic sites of the Pharaohs: Thebes, Memphis, Karnak, Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, and the mighty statues at Abu Simbel. The Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza, are the only surviving site amongst the Seven Wonders of the World. There are signs too of the wonders of the modern world, like the Aswan High Dam that provides hydroelectric power for millions, and the Suez Canal and the Mubarak Peace Bridge. For many tourists, the highlight of their visit is at Cairo’s Egyptian Museum, when they gaze on the golden mask of King Tutankhamun.
