Morocco
The North African country of Morocco is mainly mountainous. The two major ranges are the Atlas and Rif Mountains. The Sahara Desert is in the south eastern part of the country. Morocco also administers the disputed territory of Western Sahara. There have been many cultural influences on Modern Morocco: Arab and Berber are the major ones, but the former colonial powers of Spain and France, and before that the Phoenicians, Romans and Byzantines have all left their marks. Moroccan cuisine is widely known through dishes like tagine and couscous. The capital is Rabat, where the Royal Palace of King Mohammed VI, however the largest city and main commercial centre is Casablanca. Marrakesh is famous for its Kasbah or old town. Fez has the world’s oldest university, Al-Karaouine, dating from the 9th Century. Tangier, once an international city, features in many novels as a haven for spies. There are impressive Roman remains at Volubilis, and the Spanish-Moorish city of Meknes dates from the 17th Century. Many films, especially adventures and biblical epics, have been made at the mud-walled city of Ait Benhaddou. The Ifrane National Park is one of the last remaining strongholds of the endangered Barbary Macaque
